Bring On The Headache

Where to begin? I've really got to start doing this more often. Oh well, let's just start where I left off.

After band camp, went to the Fringe Festival with Sam and some of her friends. We saw a two-man play called Inside Out, about two brothers who promise their mother on her deathbed that they'll live together in a house and never leave said house. The play start in their 13th year living in the house. They argue over everything, and there's a bunch of psychologicl dialogue which I can't remember, but the two brothers end up shooting each other. As they're about to die, they open the door of the house and go outside for the first time. Then the play ends. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. It was an interesting concept, and the acting wasn't bad, but something was missing, I felt. Oh well. I had a gelati after. It was chocolate. And before, I bought some fridge magnets and a book. And after that we went to a used music place called Into The Music. I need to go there when I get back; they have some great stuff, old jazz records, used cd's, it's awesome.

Speaking of music and books, about a week later, I went to Polo intending to buy some cd's. HMV is a bleeding rip-off. They didn't have anything that I wanted for less than $19. And the music industry wonders why people turn to free downloads. Goddammit. I walked out without buying anything, thinking, "fuck HMV, I'm going to Best Buy and buying some blank cd's." I walk across the street and into Best Buy, and the variation in the prices was astounding. 'Round About Midnight by Miles Davis at HMV was about $22-$23. At Best Buy, it was $12. Hot damn, I thought to myself. I'm never going back to HMV unless I've got a gift certificate. Hell, the only reason I own the Shins record is because I had a gift cert for $10. The cd at full price was $20. But anyway, I didn't buy the Miles record. I bought some mini-discs and the Trews album. I've only listened to about half the record right now, but I can tell that it's an excellent piece of work. They've got a new album coming out soon, I'll have to check that out.

What I haven't mentioned yet for some reason is that I was ultimately trying to find the Arcade Fire album, Funeral. Hmv, $19. Best Buy, $21. Future Shop, $14.

Funeral is an amazing record that sounds like nothing else I've heard (I've read of comparisons to David Bowie and the Talking Heads, who I don't really listen to. I need to fix that.) before. The best songs are at the end, 'Wake Up', 'Rebellion (Lies)', and 'In The Back Seat'. Not much needs to be said, ultimately. Bloody brilliant record. Buy it, dammit. Who am I talking to? It's not like anyone reads this, anyway (and if they did, would they care? Probably not.).

Music needs being sated, I went to Chapter and bought Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. I got it from the library once, and I'm hooked. I even liked the movie.

Yada, yada, yada. Sam invites me to the Freehouse with some band camp friends. I go. Alec is there, Ginette, Beth, and Beth's boyfriend Ian, who didn't go to camp. Good times. Said hello to Curt. Left at 10 to be up early to leave for BC. I was up until 2 am throwing songs onto the mini disc, since I need them all for my essay. Bed at 2, up at 5. I was pretty shit faced that entire day, even in the car ride to my grandma's place.

Haven't done a whole lot since then. Bought $55 worth of old records from antique stores and used record stores. Actually, just one of each. That works out to nine records.
  1. Treasure Island - Keith Jarrett
  2. Paris Concert - Circle
  3. Gateway 2 - Dave Holland, John Abercrombie, Jack DeJohnette
  4. The New Quartet - Gary Burton
  5. Jazz Moments - George Shearing
  6. Staircase - Keith Jarrett
  7. The Joshua Tree - U2
  8. Paul Desmond Quartet Live - Paul Desmond
  9. Monk's Greatest Hits - Thelonius Monk

Which one of those doesn't belong?

I also bought a Miles poster. Something to decorate my wall when I get back. Really not much more to tell, actually. I could go for a nice Chianti and some liver. Or just adrenochrome. What's the point of sleeping, it's just a painless way to die? Oh, insomnia, how I make excuses for you. I can picture this scene playing out a few weeks from now:

Derek: I could use a shot of whiskey

Jamison: It's 11am.

Derek: Yeah, but I haven't slept in days.
